Shut up already, Oprah.

At Big Fat Deal, a reference was made to Oprah and her dieting woes. Of course, if she had found the magic cure to fatness, she would have blabbered all about it by now, and scores of women would be thin thanks to her preaching about the miracles of the wunder-cure for fatness.

You know what, people?

I hate Oprah.

First, let me say this about her: She has the power to be one of the most inspirational people of our time. She is an African American woman, a media mogul, extraordinarily powerful despite the systemic sexism and racism she has faced. She is a survivor of childhood abuse. She is a philanthroper. She could probably run for president and win, for the love of GOD.

And yet, all she gives a fuck about is her weight.

Good god, woman, embrace it already.

I am tired of hearing about what diets Oprah has tried. I am tired of hearing about how she has discovered a new pill, or a new trainer, or a new medical condition that is the cause of her horrible, horrible fatness. I am tired of the skinny-jeans triumphant-Oprah, tugging fat across the stage, I am tired of her glorifying celebrities who have lost weight and traipse around on TV with support hose pulled up to their tits just to keep all the fat in. I am tired of her self-hatred, telling women what sizes are sexy, and which aren’t, especially when we all know that’s some sort of hypocritical self-loathing because at some point she’s been that fat.

Oprah.

You are fat. Let’s face it. It’s fine. Be healthy, exercise, eat decently, and be fat already. If you want to do some good for women in the world, come to terms with your body image. I can’t think of a single more important, salient, and meaningful thing you could do for the millions of people who watch you everyday. Quit giving away cars and luggage and Philosophie face soaps, and start giving away the message that it’s OK to fucking love yourself, even if you weigh 220 pounds.

Yes. Yes, yes, yes, frigging YES.

It’s about time that the famous fat people in this world stood up and said “WE’RE FAT AND THAT’S OKAY. DEAL WITH IT.”

Yes, well said. Use your powers for good, Oprah. Imagine how amazing you could be.

To steal an old catch phrase:

Say it loud! I’m FAT AND I’M PROUD!

And, for the record, I am fucking BEAUTIFUL, too, inside and out.

    Amen, sistah!

If I weren’t afraid of another “you can’t compare discriminations” debackle, I’d say that the fat discrimination is harder to conquer, especially within yourself, than the other types of oppression Oprah has faced.

    THANK YOU!!!

I hate Oprah for the exact same reasons. A woman that has so much potential to do great things only wants to focus on how much she hates fat. She constantly makes annoying/disrespectful comments to and about her fatter guests which drives me up the damn wall.

WAKE UP OPRAH and DO SOMETHING MORE IMPORTANT WITH YOUR TIME!

You said it. I quit watching her years ago. Yeah, she does a lot of good, but it’s balanced, maybe over-balanced, by the harm she does in perpetuating bashing herself (and other fat people) because of the fat and promoting all those diets. She knows they don’t work, but she’s not going to give up the fantasy of being thin. She’s brainwashed and isn’t ready to see the light yet. I really feel sorry for her. Money and fame don’t make you happy, Oprah, it’s loving yourself and accepting yourself as you are and then living life to the best of your ability, in spite of the fatophobes.

I have to admit that I’ve often bought her magazine in moments of weakness, wanting to read whatever self-help crap she’s shilling, but the last issue was the end for me. Now she’s going after “old” looking folks – half the issue is about how not to look old. You can’t be fat or look your age, and there’s always something not quite right with you so you’ll need to continue to buy her products to try and fix yourself up. How anti-woman can you get?! Oprah, figure your shit out and leave the rest of us alone!!

Eat less, exercise more. Now, on to cancer. . .

    Word.

And as a black woman myself, I am almost a pariah in my family because I feel the same way about her.

Get over yourself, honey. It’s NEVER GOING TO STAY OFF.

I just can’t fathom why other women continue to follow whatever diet she is endorsing. She has consistantly failed at EVERY SINGLE ONE! Other than that, I like her.

Once again dear Thoughtracer you have written a beautiful and provocative post on a subject that is close to my heart, Oprah and her self-loathing and how much real damage that does to women.

    Wonderful post! Thank you.
