Take back the laundromats!

I noticed the following story at Body Impolitic. Seems NYC is taking a stab at the “fatties” doing laundry by placing “tiny” t-shirts in random driers with the phrase: “Shrink a Size!”

The original article is posted here. The article in and of itself is standard advertising fare, but the comments are particularly interesting, especially the part about where fat people are going to get fed up with anti-fat advertising and shoot up the people who are campaigning against them.

Ok. Take a breath here.

While I was going to rage against the notion that taxpayer dollars would be paying for such vitriol, it appears that an advertising company is actually footing the bill. Wonder what that’s all about? So now, the culture jammer in me wonders if there is a way to subvert this into something positive? Like, putting XL T-Shirts into dryers, labeled with phrases like: Eat Something! or Feed Me!

Fight fire with fire, after all.

I already did shrink a size after giving up antidepressants. Not that any of them would know that, since I’m still a size 18.

Thank you for saying that. I don’t think people actually believe that psychotropic medication makes people fat(ter). It’s a real big problem, especially since some of them, like the atypical antipsychotics raise blood sugar quite a bit.

And of course, all they need is for someone struggling to recover from anorexia to find one of these shirts and for that to send her straight back into the bowels of her disease!

Bingo! What’s especially disgusting is how wasteful and/or insidious this particular advertising model is. People who find them might just throw them away, or end up putting them on their kids, who will become unwitting billboards.

Begging nearly complete ignorance here. Went to the website, and didn’t see the blog listed?
